Craig Ferguson plied a deadpan ignorance as well. Ferguson went a solid two minutes on stage without even mentioning the dead-terrorist elephant in the room, before finally bringing up the monumentally important news on everybody’s mind—how Mariah Carey gave birth to twins. Then Ferguson went meta, bringing his audience into the process of joke-writing by pointing out that it’s hard for his show to come up with a fresh take, given that a whole day’s worth of talk shows, From Regis and Ellen on, already had their shot, excuse the expression, at making bin Laden jokes.

“What am I supposed to say?” Ferguson asked, mocking Monday’s most repeated line, “Osama is dead and Trump wants to see the death certificate”?

Coming back after the first commercial break, though, Ferguson was flat-out giddy delivering his famed “It’s a great day for America” line.

He clearly had never meant it more. Ferguson then wondered if President Obama, who so righteously skewered Donald Trump at the Washington Correspondents’ dinner, had deliberately timed his address to the nation to interrupt Celebrity Apprentice.

In January, Ferguson’s wife, Megan, gave birth to Liam, Ferguson’s second son (his first son, Milo, is from a previous marriage). Ferguson says don’t worry, though — despite the appearance of a busy schedule that balances a weeknight show with a stand-up tour, he has plenty of time to be a dad, thanks to his spontaneous approach with his monologues and his guests. He says his schedule is tight sometimes — but not all the time.

“I don’t spend a lot of time preparing that show,” he says with a chuckle, adding, “I don’t know if you can tell. I don’t fill my whole day looking over jokes and poring over celebrities. I came in here a half-hour ago, and I do the show in an hour. I did work on the show very hard in the beginning, but once it got where I wanted it to be and I felt comfortable with it — I think you can overproduce these things. And I feel like most of them are overproduced.

“So I feel like I have time, and I make time, for my family.”

Craig Ferguson, Winnie the Pooh

We’re admittedly torqued for the new Winnie the Pooh, but we’re also confused and slightly titillated by the inclusion of Craig Ferguson’s vocal talents as Owl. Can he handle the tree dweller’s meandering dialogue? If I were casting, I’d have given the part to a born orator like Jeremy Irons, but I have high hopes for Ferguson’s ability to speechify. Perhaps he’ll pull off the woodsy creature’s patois and act — ideally — like the male counterpart to Agnes Moorehead’s goose from Charlotte’s Web.
